In my main post for this month (see Home Page), I talked about seeking God through His Word – going directly to the true source of all information and all truth. That’s not just good, logical advice based upon the way we live our lives every day, but it’s also based an interaction in the Bible itself.
John the Baptist was described by Jesus as the greatest of men born of women. Matthew 11:11. But there came a time when even John the Baptist, who had proclaimed Jesus as the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world, had some questions about Jesus. He could have asked the Scribes and the Pharisees those questions about Jesus – for even they had seen the works of the Lord. He could have asked the Jewish Sanhedrin the questions he had. Perhaps there was a local source of gossip back then (much like much of our social media today) to whom he could have gone. But he didn’t. John asked directly of Jesus Himself. The story is told in Luke 7:18-22:
“Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”
When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’” And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.
Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.”
John didn’t waste time or energy seeking his answers from anyone other than Jesus – and boy, did he get answers! The Scripture about the Messiah and what he would do was fulfilled in front of the eyes of John’s disciples, so they could go back and tell what Jesus has said to them, and what Jesus had done in front of them!
Be just like John – is you have a question seek Jesus first – not as a last resort! Seek Jesus as your first truth, and He will not disappoint. Don’t waste your time and energy, and risk deception, by looking to other sources of information.
Have questions about the Word? Join us as Maple Grove every Sunday morning and evening (and Wednesday evenings too) as we hear the Word of God from the Bible itself!
