One of my favorite hymns we usually sing around this time of year is Count Your Blessings! It was written by Johnson Oatman, Jr. who died in 1922. But what an amazing message he left through this hymn. Here’s the chorus:
Count your blessings, name them one by one
Count your blessings, see what God hath done
Count your blessings, name them one by one
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done
Why is this lesson important? God truly gives us so many blessings each and every day that we sometimes overlook them, or take them for granted. But, if we follow the advice of this hymn, and actually stop for a moment and meditate upon all that God has done in our lives, we will definitely recognize His handiwork. And sometimes, we will just be amazed!
God promises blessing to His children. Consider Deuteronomy 28:1-6:
Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:
“Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country.
“Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.
“Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.
“Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.
Thank your Lord for your many blessings. May we honor and glorify you, and always be thankful.
