A Pilgrim Prayer of Thanksgiving

Ever wonder about what the Pilgrims prayed on what we call the “first Thanksgiving,” when they praised God for a successful harvest. The Pilgrims used something called The Book of Common Prayer as well as the Bible.  The Book of Common Prayer was created in 1549, and would have been a staple for prayer in the New World. I want to share with you one of the prayers of “General Thanksgiving.”  Oh, what a prayer – and it’s one we should still pray today because God has not changed. Pray this one with me…

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

The Book of Common Prayer (1662, p. 43). As we celebrate thanksgiving this month, let’s remember this Pilgrim’s prayer and send it Heavenward once again.

This Thanksgiving let us remember and be truly thankful for the joys and blessings of the past year. The Lord has truly blessed our church — He has provided for our every need!  Thank God for the people He has brought into your life; for relationships that have been strengthened; for opportunities you have had to share His love. Thank Him for His comfort during difficult times; for trials that have drawn you closer to Him; for answered prayers; and for His gifts of love, joy, and peace.

Thank you so much Bro. Parks for this information and I’ll be sure to thank God for the things you suggested. Will hopefully be sending this up today at the family gathering . May God continue to bless you, your family and your congregation as you continue to honor His word.
